The West is warning against repeating the mistakes of the Munich Agreement amid anxiety over the US election.

More than a hundred current and former high-ranking officials from Western countries have called on Europe to be prepared for either outcome of the US presidential election and prevent an agreement with Russia from being reached. Against the background of the US election, Ukraine and its allies are facing a two-pronged strategic danger.

The first is that a new administration headed by Republican candidate Trump may try to impose an agreement with the aggressor that would be harmful to the interests of Ukrainian and European security.

The second scenario is that a new administration led by Democratic candidate Harris will continue Biden’s policy of “stagnation and red lines, which has restrained Ukraine from winning the war.”

The signatories of the statement are sure that in both cases, the parallels with the Munich Agreement of 1938 are obvious – they would be a false peace achieved through tacit European consent to the dismemberment of a sovereign state. The authors suggest that a coalition of willing NATO countries commit to increasing military and financial support for Kyiv and reaffirm their commitment to restoring a sovereign Ukraine within internationally recognized borders, focusing on a clear strategy for victory.
