The US will not provide Ukraine with strong security guarantees but will demand them from Europe. Britain, Italy and Turkey react.

Donald Trump said that he “is not going to give too many security guarantees to Ukraine,” and “Let Europe do it. It is in their interests; it is their neighbor. But we will remain partners with Ukraine, we need rare earth metals.”

Trump made the remarks after concluding a mineral agreement, through which the US wants to be compensated for the $350B it has allocated to Ukraine and “earn even more.” However, Trump believes that the agreement is beneficial for Ukraine from a security point of view.

“We will work there, and it is a kind of automatic security when we are there, but Europe will be watching this very closely,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on the US to provide Ukraine with security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression.

The head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, believes that Ukraine must be sure that an invasion will not happen again. But such guarantees can only be implemented in the context of NATO membership.

Turkey has also stated it is ready to deploy a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine if it is involved in all consultations.
