The US will insist that all NATO countries allocate 2% of their GDP to defense and work on increasing interoperability.

The US will insist that each NATO member state spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, said House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“This week I will meet with the delegations from NATO countries, and I will raise this very important issue with each of them,” he said.

He emphasized that the Republican party would continue to support NATO in every way if Democrats would strengthen their commitment to the Alliance.

As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated: “The war in Ukraine demonstrated not only that our reserves were insufficient but also our production capacity. It also revealed serious shortcomings in our interoperability. We should take this very seriously – both governments and industry”.

To solve these problems, the Allies should increase their defense budgets and learn how to use them better when implementing joint projects and purchases. Currently, 23 countries have reached defense spending of 2% of GDP, and some have exceeded it, but the rest of the Alliance countries have committed to achieving this indicator soon.
