The US wants to provide Ukraine with weapons using frozen Russian assets, and Europe will pay for it.
The US President’s Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said that the US is mulling the possibility of purchasing American weapons for Ukraine using frozen Russian assets. “This will be discussed with the president,” he added.
At the same time, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance should invest more in its defense and increase production and aid to Ukraine.
“If this new Trump administration is willing to keep on supplying Ukraine from its defense industrial base, the bill will be paid by the Europeans, I’m absolutely convinced of this, we have to be willing to do that,” he stressed.
Rutte noted that it is essential that the Russian Federation does not win, as this may lead to Putin inspiring the leaders of North Korea and China. Therefore, support for Ukraine needs to be stepped up.
Notably, sales of American military equipment to foreign governments increased by 29% last year to $318.7B. This is resulted from attempts by countries to replace their weapons that were transferred to Ukraine, as well as to prepare for future large-scale conflicts.
