The US Senate threatens Russia with “tough” sanctions for delaying the peace process, bypassing Trump.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that support for a bill imposing “tough sanctions” against Russia has grown in the US Congress to 81 senators out of the 100 total. To override a possible veto by President Donald Trump in the Senate, 67 votes are required.

“Russia has agreed to provide its document on the terms of the ceasefire within the next few days. Its content will show whether Russia is serious about peace,” said a statement from Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal.

It seems that in the absence of progress, Russia can expect decisive action from the US Senate.

“We are extremely pleased that 81 senators now support the bill on sanctions against Russia for its barbaric invasion of Ukraine. Our legislation isolates Russia with tough tariffs on other countries that support these crimes,” the statement said.

A priority is to hold China accountable for supporting Putin’s war machine by purchasing cheap Russian oil through a shadowy naval supply line. While we seek peace, it is increasingly clear to us – and to the vast majority of the Senate – that Putin is playing games.
