The Ukrainian agricultural sector has suffered $80B in losses and lost 25% of its sown area due to the war.
As stated by the General Director of the Ukrainian Agrarian Club, Oleg Khomenko: “Direct and indirect losses for agriculture during the war exceed $80B. This includes infrastructure, production facilities, and assets for grain storage. We see a significant impact on railway and port infrastructure. We also lost about 25% of the previous sown area.”
Khomenko states that since the fall of last year, during the period of active export of Ukrainian grain, Russia has been trying to prevent exportation by striking the Black Sea ports’ infrastructure, through which 90% of agricultural products travel. The attacks, in addition to direct damage, have led to an increase in insurance costs.
It is noted that the war has reduced harvest volume, but farmers have still managed to gradually increase grain exports. In 2022, the harvest decreased by 37% compared to the pre-war year of 2021 to 67.7 million tons, but in 2023 the results improved and 81.6 million tons were harvested.
