The UK voices requirements for Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
The political decision on Ukraine’s accession to NATO is inextricably linked with the need for significant defense reforms in the country, said Melinda Simmons, the British ambassador to Ukraine. According to her, if Ukraine does not make significant progress in these reforms, it will provide a convenient reason for those less interested in expanding the number of NATO members. The ambassador noted that the requirement for the Ukrainian military’s interoperability with NATO forces was fulfilled even before the start of the full-scale war. Still, Ukraine needs institutional reform of defense mechanisms in Ukraine. Reforms in defense procurement, human defense resources, etc. are also required. Simmons emphasized that these reforms are needed not only for Ukraine’s accession to NATO but also to have a strong military in the future.
