The Slovak government has given its support to Ukraine’s EU accession.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has backed Ukraine’s EU membership, emphasizing that all conditions must be satisfied.
“The Slovak government wishes Ukraine European development. If Ukraine wants to join the EU, this is its sovereign decision, and we support this decision,” he stressed.
Fico added that Slovakia has already received €101M from the EU to implement projects in Ukraine, primarily in energy infrastructure. The funds are available to Slovak companies as loans guaranteed by European institutions.
The prime minister mentioned that a joint meeting between the Slovak and Ukrainian governments may take place in the fall to discuss collaborative projects. The last time the governments of the two countries convened was in 2024 near Uzhhorod, and before that, they met in the Slovak city of Mykhailivka.
Fico also asserted that Ukraine’s membership in the EU would provide more opportunities than drawbacks for his country. He had previously stated that Ukraine is not yet ready for EU membership, but Slovakia will not block the commencement of accession negotiations.
