The Pentagon is running out of money for weapons for Ukraine.
Only about $6B remains in the $48B aid package for Ukraine that Congress approved in December. This means that US funding for weapons and supplies could end by mid-summer, writes Politico.
As a result, lawmakers are concerned about the White House’s next plan, including whether the administration will ask for another big military aid package. Funding is supposed to flow continuously, especially when Kyiv is preparing for a large-scale counteroffensive and regaining territory in the east.
“The White House is discussing a new aid package designed to continue supporting Ukraine”, a senior administration official told Politico. But this time, any proposal from the White House in late summer could run into a heated debate over the debt limit and will almost certainly face opposition from a small but vocal group of Republicans who want to cut spending on Ukraine.
