The EU states are actively discussing the provision of further Ukrainian aid after Trump’s victory.
At a meeting in Budapest last week, EU leaders discussed continuing military support for Ukraine should Donald Trump end US aid. Several officials believe the European Commission should develop proposals detailing how the EU will respond to such a move by the US.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Europe cannot finance a “losing war” if the US stops its support. The Estonian prime minister stated that the support of Ukraine in the coming months will determine the EU’s future. EC President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the EU is engaged in a dialogue with the US and is consistently making arguments for the continuation and strengthening of aid to Ukraine, as Russian aggression poses a threat not only to Europe but also to global security.
In Kyiv, EU High Representative Josep Borrell emphasized that the Europeans will continue to support Ukraine no matter what.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk plans to meet with the President of France, the Prime Minister of the UK, the Secretary General of NATO, and the leaders of the Nordic and Baltic countries to discuss transatlantic cooperation and the war in Ukraine.
