The EU is considering a new scheme for supplying gas to Ukraine and three other European countries.

The EU is considering the option of supplying gas to Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova using Ukrainian underground storage facilities. It is assumed that the gas would be pumped into Ukrainian underground storage facilities and then used for the four countries. The plan is for 10 billion cubic meters, one billion of which will be intended for Moldova, and the rest will be distributed between three other countries. The gas could originate from anywhere, including LNG from the United States.
In 2022 and 2023, the EU discussed the possibility of centralized gas procurement to reduce dependence on Russian energy. Ukraine will be able to pay for gas with funds from the Ukraine Facility program.
In parallel, the possibility of reducing transit tariffs in some EU countries through which gas travels to Hungary and Slovakia is also being discussed. Kyiv may consider lowering its tariffs for gas entry/exit to the GTS and for its storage.
