The EU is confident that Ukrainian exports of biomethane to the EU can be expanded.

The initial experience of exporting Ukrainian biomethane to Europe via the GTS in February 2025 was successful, so we can expect the project to grow in the future, says Anne Bercio, Trade Manager of the EU Delegation to Ukraine. She noted that last month, two small pilot batches of Ukrainian biomethane were purchased by traders from Germany.
“This may not yet be an economically viable project, as the volumes were too small. However, this presents a very good business case, as it demonstrates compliance with EU requirements for sustainability and traceability of all energy units along the value chain. I believe that in 2025 we will see up to 10 different agricultural producers joining this initiative,” Bercio added.
The EU official observed that there are various estimates of Ukrainian biomethane’s potential. Depending on the source, they range from one billion cubic meters to “significantly larger volumes,” considering Ukraine’s large agricultural sector.
