The EU is committed to playing a central role in peace talks and is prepared to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola noted that the international community must act as a united front on the issue of Ukrainian security guarantees, and Europe bears a special responsibility; however, a just peace is also in the US’ interests. She recalled that the EU has provided €135B in assistance to ensure Ukraine’s financial stability and defense.
“Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security, and that is why the EU must play a central role in peace talks. To act from a position of strength, we need to enhance our own defense capabilities. If we are serious about our security, our financial commitments must correspond to the threats we face,” Metsola said.
She emphasized that Europe is ready to provide Ukraine with the necessary security guarantees, even if the US refuses to do so. Furthermore, she is confident that Europe will be prepared to confront threats from China or the Russian Federation independently if the United States chooses to reduce its contribution to global security.
