The EU discusses the deployment of two peacekeeping missions in Ukraine following the war.

One of these missions could operate under the auspices of the UN and involve soldiers from India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, who would be stationed along the Russian-Ukrainian border. The second mission could include soldiers from the UK, France, Germany, Canada, and Italy monitoring Ukraine’s borders with the EU. The proposal entails several levels of interaction: peacekeepers in the demilitarized zone, the Ukrainian military, a volunteer contingent near Ukraine’s western border, and strategic support from the US.

French President Emmanuel Macron is also considering alternatives to deploying European troops in Ukraine, including the possibility of establishing a mission to secure a future peace agreement under UN leadership. However, any UN peacekeeping force would require the Security Council’s approval. The prospects for this appear uncertain, as Russia, and perhaps the US, would likely oppose this move.

President Zelenskyy emphasized that while Ukraine supports cooperation with the UN, it does not see it as a substitute for security guarantees. According to him, the organization would not be able to ensure protection against a renewed Russian invasion.
