The EU calls energy a decisive front this winter, and urges Ukraine to be allowed strikes on Russian territory.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the main topics in the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in New York were the support of Ukraine before the approach of winter and the avoidance of a major humanitarian crisis.
“Putin is trying to achieve through energy collapse what he can’t obtain on the battlefield,” he says.
According to him, the country needs more air defense systems, as well as receiving permission to attack military facilities on Russian territory: “Allow Ukraine to hit the shooters, not just arrows! Not everyone agrees with this measure yet. However, we have promised to support Ukraine by all possible means for as long as it takes, and the energy front will be decisive this winter.”
Through repair work financed by partner countries, Ukraine aims to restore 4-5 GW of generation by winter. As well, the EU will increase Ukraine’s capacity to import European electricity to 2.2 GW.
