The Economist provided its assessment of Ukraine’s losses during the full-scale war.

Ukraine’s military losses during the war could range from 60,000 to 100,000 dead with about 400,000 more soldiers wounded.

“More than 0.5% of the pre-war male population of fighting age (18-49 years old) were killed,” the publication says, noting that almost 1 in 20 men of fighting age were killed or wounded to the point that they could not continue fighting.

The Economist notes that Ukraine and Russia’s losses as a percentage of their populations are higher than US losses in the Vietnam and Korean wars combined.

The last time Ukraine’s losses were publicly announced was in February 2024, when the president announced the deaths of 31,000 soldiers. In September, the WSJ reported that Ukraine’s losses could total 80,000 people killed and another 400,000 wounded, but President Zelenskyy called the calculations erroneous.

However, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian military’s total losses currently amount to 735,410 soldiers.
