The EC is developing a plan to completely stop Russian gas imports; Trump offers an alternative.

The European Commission is working on a plan to remove all Russian fossil fuels from the EU market, EC spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said in Brussels on January 20. She added that the EU has cut all Russian coal imports, most Russian oil imports, and over 66% of Russian gas.

“Despite these significant results, Russian gas is still present in the EU market. And this is something we don’t want to see, and this is one of the issues that will be addressed in this roadmap, which will be presented in the coming weeks,” Itkonen added.

Following his inauguration, US President Donald Trump suggested that Europe replace Russian hydrocarbons with American imports, repeating his call for the EU to buy more American oil and gas if the bloc wants to avoid new tariffs. Trump seeks to boost the US energy sector by lifting bans on developing offshore oil and gas fields and launching new LNG plants.
