The EC has approved a plan to completely abandon Russian gas and oil.

The European Commission has approved a legislative proposal that outlines a gradual phase-out of Russian gas and oil imports into the EU by the end of 2027, with the goal of enhancing the bloc’s energy independence and competitiveness. The regulation entails a gradual reduction in imports of pipeline gas and LNG from Russia, as well as a total cessation of Russian oil imports by the end of 2027. EU countries are required to develop diversification plans with clear measures and timelines.

Starting January 1 2026, signing new contracts for Russian gas imports will be prohibited. Short-term contracts will expire by June 17 2026, with exceptions for pipeline gas for landlocked countries, where long-term contracts will remain valid until the end of 2027. Long-term contracts for LNG terminal services for Russian customers will also be banned, facilitating a shift to alternative suppliers.

The EC will oversee the process and implement emergency measures if supply is at risk. Additionally, the regulation enhances transparency by mandating that companies disclose information on contracts including the origin of the purchased gas.
