The Biden administration wants to use $6B on weapons for Ukraine before Trump’s inauguration.
The Biden administration plans to exhaust the remaining funds that have been allocated for Ukrainian military aid by the day of Trump’s inauguration – January 20 2025, two White House officials told Politico.
Currently, Biden has at his disposal $4.3B for the provision of weapons from US military warehouses and another $2.1B for the purchase of firearms through contracts with American defense companies. The White House wants to use these funds as soon as possible so that Ukraine has enough weapons to counter a Russian offensive even if Trump discontinues aid.
However, it takes months to send weapons to Ukraine, so these aid packages are unlikely to arrive in full by the end of January 2025, and Trump will be able to suspend delivery. Another problem is the lack of sufficient stock in US warehouses.
During his campaign, Trump made it clear that he would stop or drastically reduce military aid to Ukraine if he won the election.
