Scholz rules out a country at war joining NATO and speaks of peace.

The German chancellor does not see a possibility for inviting Ukraine to NATO right now – in his opinion, a country in a state of war “unequivocally cannot become a member” of the Alliance.

“We made a decision and outlined the perspective. I believe there is no need for a new decision apart from the existing one,” said Olaf Scholz.

He added that discussions regarding “security guarantees in the post-war situation” are ongoing. On the one hand, he sees his task as supporting Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and, on the other, preventing the war from escalating into a war between Russia and NATO.

He also repeated once again that he will not allow the transfer to Ukraine of German Taurus cruise missiles and other weapons that could contribute to escalation. According to the chancellor, the moment has come to end the war and create prospects for a just peace for Ukraine as soon as possible, and not a peace dictated by Russia.
