Scholz asked to increase Germany’s national debt threshold to provide €3B in aid to Ukraine.
The ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany, to which Chancellor Scholz belongs, says that a decision on new arms supplies to Ukraine worth €3B could be made before the parliamentary elections in February, but for this, strict restrictions on state borrowing in Germany must be suspended.
“I call on other parliamentary groups to quickly take action for this legally permissible and necessary step,” said the head of the SPD parliamentary group, Rolf Mützenich, warning against financing aid to Ukraine “from other budget areas, such as family spending, investments, or pensions.”
At the same time, Scholz said that his position on this issue is unchanged: “We will finance this additionally through loans.”
In contrast, the Free Democratic Party and the Greens propose financing additional aid to Ukraine using the budget article devoted to unplanned expenses. The conservative CDU/CSU bloc also called for new assistance to Ukraine before the elections.
