Russia has regained only 20% of its territory in the Ukrainian-occupied Kursk region. Vugledar’s capture will have a limited impact on Russian operations in the Donbas.

On October 6, it will be two months since the beginning of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the Kursk region. According to various estimates, Russia has reclaimed between 8% and 21% of its territory in the war zone.

Maps from the ISW show military operations in the Kursk region covering up to 1,160 square kilometers, of which about 220 square kilometers (21%) have been recaptured by Russia. According to DeepState estimates, the zone of hostilities in the Kursk region reached more than 1,257 square kilometers at the end of August. At the beginning of October, it decreased by 105 square kilometers (8%).

At the same time, according to ISW, the capture of Vugledar is unlikely to fundamentally change the course of Russian offensive operations in the western Donetsk region since this city is not a particularly important logistical hub.

“Although it is unclear whether they will be able to advance beyond Vugledar in the near future quickly,” analysts said.
