Romania wants to buy a Moldovan port on the border with Ukraine from the EBRD to create a center for post-war reconstruction.

The Romanian government will establish a working group to start negotiations with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to acquire the International Free Port of Giurgiulesti (PILG) on the Danube in Moldova.

Giurgiulesti is the only port in the Republic of Moldova accessible to sea vessels, located on the border with Romania and Ukraine. It is currently operated by Danube Logistics, owned by the EBRD. Also, the Moldovan government specified that two port infrastructure facilities operate in Giurgiulesti: PILG and the state port belonging to Moldova.

There is no mention of a sale of the state port. A year ago, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced that his country could buy a Moldovan port to strengthen its role in the region’s economic development and recovery and create a center for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
