Polish oil producers are urging their government to lift the embargo on Ukrainian rapeseed imports due to a raw material shortage.

The Polish Association of Oil Producers (PSPO), which represents 95% of the industry, has asked Prime Minister Donald Tusk to reverse the 2023 order banning Ukrainian rapeseed imports. The raw material shortage for the 2025-2026 season could reach at least 500,000 tons, threatening the operation of local oil refineries. Companies are already facing rapeseed shortages this season because of a reduced harvest.

Industry representatives highlight that the current situation puts Polish companies at a disadvantage compared to other EU countries, which can purchase Ukrainian rapeseed without restrictions. The PSPO emphasizes that lifting the ban will not harm Polish farmers, as domestic rapeseed will still be sold at European prices.

Although Ukraine’s export infrastructure has significantly changed since 2022, and mass Polish imports are unlikely to happen again, the Polish government does not plan to lift the ban until negotiations on the EU-Ukraine trade agreement are completed.
