Poland will be the first country to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Poland has decided to transfer the first shipment of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, announced Polish President Andrzej Duda during his visit to Lviv, Ukraine. The transfer will be part of a broader support effort by NATO members, Duda stated at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian and Lithuanian counterparts. He added that the country is holding concrete talks to build a coalition supporting Ukraine with heavy military equipment. The move underscores growing pressure on Berlin as the ruling coalition in Warsaw has repeatedly criticized Germany for its delays in providing military aid to Ukraine. However, how soon Ukraine receives these tanks will likely depend on how quickly Warsaw receives Abrams and K2 tanks from the US and South Korea. Also, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s permission is required for the transfer since Germany is the manufacturing country.
