Orban expects Trump’s victory in the US election and for him to establish peace in Ukraine.
A few days after the US presidential elections on November 5, Hungary will host EU leaders at a summit in Budapest. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán described the upcoming summit as a moment to unite the bloc “to try to find a common voice.”
According to Orbán, if Trump is elected president he will not wait for his inauguration and will act immediately to “establish peace” between Ukraine and Russia, so European leaders should not waste time.
“We have to react intellectually, philosophically, then strategically, and then as quickly as possible at the level of actions,” he added.
Orbán considers the EU’s approach to Ukraine “stupid” because the war cannot be won on the battlefield, so negotiations must take place. He blocked the EU’s military and financial aid to Ukraine but stressed that his government has launched “the largest humanitarian aid program in history” and is sheltering tens of thousands of Ukrainians in Hungary.
