Olaf Scholz expressed annoyance at calls to supply Ukraine with its main battle tanks.
According to the chancellor, the debate about tanks “completely ignores the fact that through our circular exchange, we have also allowed more than 100 battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to be delivered to Ukraine,” reported Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung. Scholz noted that partners such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Romania, and Greece have transferred Eastern European-made tanks to Ukraine, where they can be used immediately, as logistics, ammunition, spare parts, and the necessary know-how are available. “Instead, we are gradually replenishing the stocks of our partners with Western equipment,” Scholz said. So, he is surprised “that some critics act as if we only supply helmets”. Regarding the issue of supplying its battle tanks, the chancellor said: “The position of the federal government is clear: do not act alone, and it will continue to be so.”
