NATO seeks to increase support for Ukraine to persuade Russia to negotiate.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said before a meeting of foreign ministers from NATO countries that the Alliance’s transition to long-term commitments to support Ukraine are designed to push Russia toward peace negotiations.
“The reality is this: if you want an end to this war, the sooner we can convince Moscow that it cannot win on the battlefield, cannot ‘wait’, the sooner we can reach a peace agreement. So, NATO’s stronger role in coordinating and providing support is the way to end this war in a way in which Ukraine wins,” he added.
Alliance officials are discussing how NATO can take more responsibility for coordinating the supply of military equipment and training of Ukrainian soldiers. These efforts also include the establishment of multi-year financial obligations. According to Stoltenberg, this ministerial meeting will be the basis for establishing a consensus on these issues as a part of preparations for the July summit in Washington.
Discussions regarding creating a new $100B multi-year support fund for Ukraine within NATO will continue until the summer summit.
