NATO and EU membership and weapons are Zelenskyy’s preferred Ukrainian security guarantees.
President Zelenskyy notes that strategically, Ukraine views membership in the EU and NATO as its primary security guarantees.
“We want to end the war with a just peace; for this, we need confidence that Russia will not return to war again. We need strong security guarantees,” he said.
However, Zelenskyy concedes that four countries do not yet support Ukraine’s NATO ambitions: the US, Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany.
However, Polish President Andrzej Duda said: “We understand that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be possible only after the cessation of hostilities. But I insist that NATO countries give Ukraine an invitation to membership.”
He said this would be the first step towards providing real security guarantees. The Ukrainian president also supports the deployment of a foreign military contingent on Ukrainian territory but emphasized that this cannot be the only security guarantee. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will not agree to a reduction in the size of its military because it is the backbone of the nation’s security.
