Merz believes that Ukraine should not make any concessions.

During a joint press conference in Berlin with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the Ukraine issue and commended Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for his readiness to engage in negotiations in Turkey, despite the challenging situation.
“This demonstrates genuine intent and a willingness to compromise,” remarked the German chancellor.
However, Merz emphasized that requesting further concessions from Ukraine is no longer acceptable.
“The entire situation has surpassed what the nation can endure,” he stated.
He also added, “None of us is willing to accept that military force can alter borders in Europe. If we permit this now, we risk new acts of aggression.”
Additionally, Merz reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine militarily as long as needed and announced that new sanctions targeting Russia, particularly in the energy and financial sectors, are on the horizon if progress in ceasefire negotiations is not achieved by the end of the week.
