Macron urges NATO to begin planning for Ukraine’s security guarantees.

A meeting of military and NATO leaders from over 30 countries took place in Paris on March 11, where French President Emmanuel Macron called for a plan to “define credible security guarantees” for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. This call followed Ukraine’s agreement to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia proposed by the US.

Macron emphasized that as peace talks advance, it is essential to start planning to ensure “the durability of peace” in Ukraine while continuing to support the Ukrainian army. He highlighted that Europe must provide maximum support to Ukraine and bolster its defenses.

The chiefs of staff of the armed forces from European and NATO countries, including the UK and Turkey, concurred that security guarantees for Ukraine are intrinsically linked to NATO and its capabilities.

Macron reiterated that European troops could only be deployed on Ukrainian soil after a peace agreement is signed, ensuring its complete compliance. France is also prepared to discuss extending nuclear deterrence to its European partners.
