Macron outlined steps for talks between the US, Ukraine and Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with Donald Trump on February 24 in Washington, warned that “peace cannot mean surrender” for Kyiv. Macron supports President Zelenskyy visiting the White House, which could improve the two leaders’ relationship. According to the French president,

“The scheme of the future negotiations to end the war should be the following: negotiations between the US and Russia and between the US and Ukraine. First, we need a ceasefire. I think this can be completed in the coming weeks. If the ceasefire is not respected, then this will be the proof that Russia is not serious,” the French leader said.

Macron stressed that the issue of deterring Russia should be a priority to prevent new aggression in the future.

“We are ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees,” he added, expressing hope for strong US participation in ensuring peace in Ukraine.

Trump responded by saying that Putin would “accept” the idea of sending European peacekeepers as part of a potential peace deal.
