Kyiv has asked Berlin to provide more Leopard-2 tanks and Marder IFVs.
The Ukrainian army desperately needs more Western battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and other armored vehicles. “Each Leopard-2 is literally worth its weight in gold for a decisive offensive,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk told German media.
He believes that the Bundeswehr can provide more than the 18 units already delivered from its stock of more than 300 machines. The diplomat says the number of tanks for Ukraine can be tripled without jeopardizing Germany’s defense capability. Melnyk also asked for 60 more Marder IFVs for the Ukrainian army.
A Ukrainian government official also renewed his call for Germany to supply Taurus cruise missiles and help equip a powerful Ukrainian Air Force. “Ukraine is also waiting for Germany’s strategic decision on active participation in the fighter coalition, intended to source more than 130 aircraft, so that Ukrainian pilots can immediately train on Eurofighters,” Melnyk said.
