Kallas names the EU’s requirement for discussing peacekeepers being sent to Ukraine.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that the bloc’s countries have yet to discuss sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. Kallas believes that peace is needed first. “But Russia does not want peace. This is clearly understood,” she said.

Earlier, the French president planned to raise the issue of deploying a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine for discussion at the EU leaders’ summit on December 18-19. However, the EU has not yet established a unified position on the peacekeeper issue.

For example, Italy’s defense minister stated that the country was ready to participate in a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. In turn, the country’s foreign minister called the statement “premature” and said it was necessary first to achieve a “just peace.”

The Dutch defense minister did not rule out the possibility of sending a peacekeeping mission without unanimous approval from the EU member states in the event of a ceasefire. However, the country’s foreign minister said it is too early to speculate on a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Trump has given his support to sending a European peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine following discussions with Ukrainian and French leaders in Paris on December 7.
