Hungary rejects an EU security guarantee draft and a new military support package for Ukraine, putting the €20B aid plan on hold.

On February 28, Hungary opposed a draft document providing support for Ukraine during a meeting of EU ambassadors. This document included discussions about potential EU security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as a new military aid package.

As a result, the EU is currently halting the development of this €20B aid plan for Ukraine. Sources suggest that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen might propose more creative approaches to compel countries to support Ukraine.

Concurrently, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico indicated that he might obstruct the EU summit’s decision scheduled for March 6 regarding further assistance to Ukraine if the bloc does not address the issue of resuming gas transit through Ukraine. Fico is advocating for the EU to officially urge Kyiv to restart transit, potentially not just for Russian resources but also for Azerbaijani resources. Additionally, Bratislava seeks to include a demand for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine within the summit’s conclusions.
