Hungary is ready to remove its veto from €50B in EU aid to Ukraine for a “favor” from the EC.

Hungary is ready to lift its veto on the EU’s current €50B funding proposal for Ukraine if the EU unfreezes €30B earmarked for Budapest, which was blocked last year due to problems with the rule of law and bribery, said Balazs Orban, the political director for the Hungarian Prime Minister.

He adds that Hungary opposes a four-year aid plan and would prefer the EU offer Ukraine one year of funding without any budget amendments. Balazs Orbán noted that Budapest will also consider the possibility of “contributing” to this package.

In turn, EC President Charles Michel is convinced that it will be possible to reach a compromise regarding the allocation of €50B in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. Yesterday, the EU released €10B for Hungary, but Orban’s support for Ukraine is still unclear.
