Hungary is blackmailing Ukraine by blocking €6.5B in military aid due to the cessation of Russian oil transit to the EU.

Hungary will block the €6.5B military aid financing program for Ukraine under the European Peace Fund until Ukraine resumes supplies of Russian oil to Hungary, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said.

He emphasized that the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine clearly states that Ukraine cannot entirely or partially interrupt the transit of energy carriers through its territory to EU countries. Szijjarto believes it will be difficult for the EC to support Ukraine in this matter, but Hungary will not limit itself to just a complaint to the EU.

“The EU should put pressure on Ukraine to resume Lukoil oil supplies to the EU,” the diplomat said.

The EC confirmed receipt of an appeal from Hungary and Slovakia regarding the termination of Lukoil’s oil transit and stated that this currently does not directly impact the safety of oil supplies to the EU.
