Hungary has promised to support sanctions targeting Russia if Putin refuses a truce.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó confirmed that Hungary may back Western sanctions against Russia if Donald Trump employs them to penalize Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the Kremlin’s unwillingness to peacefully resolve the war in Ukraine.
The minister, who previously called EU sanctions against Russia “ridiculous” and ineffective, acknowledged that Budapest’s stance may shift. According to Szijjártó, everything will depend on future developments. In particular, the Hungarian minister linked the possibility of imposing sanctions with possible actions by the US, which has threatened the Kremlin with secondary sanctions on all Russian oil if Putin does not promote a truce and continues to disrupt the peace process.
When asked if Hungary would support EU sanctions as part of Trump’s negotiating strategy, Szijjártó expressed hope that peace between Russia and Ukraine would be reached, eliminating the need for new sanctions.
“But if this positive scenario does not unfold, we will have to discuss it,” he added.
