Germany has rejected the notion of returning to Russian gas purchases from Russia utilizing Nord Stream.

The country does not intend to abandon Russian sanctions and, specifically, will not revert to direct Russian gas purchases, stated Christiane Hoffmann, deputy spokesperson for the federal government.

Annika Einhorn, a representative of the German Ministry of Economics, emphasized that Germany has exerted considerable effort to eliminate its dependence on Russian energy in a very short time and currently has no plans to reenter that dependency, as energy freedom is of great importance. She added that the country does not plan to resume gas imports through any of the four branches of the Nord Stream pipeline that survived the explosion involving the other three branches in the fall of 2022.

Einhorn also confirmed that the German government is not involved in any potential negotiations between the US and Russia regarding the gas pipeline and has no association with it.

Additionally, Germany does not buy liquefied gas from Russia, though the minister does not rule out that commercial gas purchases may contain “molecules” of Russian LNG.
