Germany has dismissed the notion of Ukraine joining the EU and NATO before the war ends.

Future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he supports Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, but its accession to the EU and NATO can only occur after peace is achieved. Merz emphasized that this position pertains to the current situation, and the assurances regarding Ukraine’s future membership in both organizations remain intact.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha highlighted at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum that Ukraine’s NATO membership should not be taken off the agenda, as it is crucial for ensuring transatlantic security. Sybiha added that Ukraine is willing to contribute militarily if it joins the Alliance.
“Ukraine has 110 brigades that possess daily combat experience. This would certainly be a viable and significant contribution to future transatlantic security. And it’s the most cost-effective,” the minister remarked.
However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that his country will not allow Brussels to compel it into backing Ukraine’s bid for European Union membership.
“This is a major issue with far-reaching implications for our security, economy, and agriculture,” Orban stated.
