Europe lacks the unity to double support for Ukraine while the resources are there.
Since the war began, Europe has provided significant assistance to Ukraine, which is something that Putin did not count on, and can increase its support to compensate for a potential termination of the US’ support for Kyiv. For this, Europe needs more unity and cohesion, particularly in the solution to the issue of Hungary, according to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, and Gabrielius Landsbergis of Lithuania.
During the YES forum in Kyiv, Sikorski highlights the fact that Ukraine has received about €120B from the EU, primarily in financial aid.
“In my opinion, the real moment of truth for Europe will come if the US stops its support,” the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry noted.
He added that “€120B is less than 0.5% of Europe’s GDP per year. We spent 500-600% more to help our people solve energy costs. Therefore, we can afford to double our support to Ukraine”.
Landsbergis, calling on EU and NATO countries to increase their defense budgets and support for Ukraine, as there is little time left to avoid the worst-case scenario.
