Europe is working on a railway alternative to the grain corridor.
The Sea2Sea freight rail corridor, which will connect northern Greece and Bulgaria to the Romanian border, will transport €650M worth of cargo every year and enable the transfer of significant volumes of sea freight from the Bosphorus to rail. The Sea2Sea project is aimed at the railway connection of the Greek ports of Thessaloniki, Kavala, and Alexandroupolis with the Bulgarian Black Sea ports of Varna and Burgas. The railway corridor will also extend to the port of Ruse on the Danube and the Bulgarian-Romanian border. Greece and Bulgaria plan to create a joint company to manage the project. Greece is investing about €4B in railway projects on its territory. Construction contracts will be signed in 2023, and the work should be completed by 2027-2028.
