Europe considers utilizing NATO assets for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine.

NATO could play a crucial role in facilitating a European military mission aimed at securing a peace deal in Ukraine, according to plans being developed by a coalition of Kyiv’s allies. NATO’s command and control structures would be utilized to deploy a “deterrence force” in Ukraine, under a proposal currently being discussed by France and Britain. This force could also leverage the alliance’s shared intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
The proposal is among several options being evaluated and may be adjusted before a final agreement is established. Advocates of the force view NATO involvement as a way to indirectly engage the US in the initiative and secure Washington’s implicit support. Some coalition members are hesitant to include NATO in any final plan given Trump’s stated opposition to any form of intervention in Ukraine following a ceasefire agreement.
However, several countries, including Italy, have urged the UN to take on a coordinating role in peacekeeping operations. Others have countered this idea, expressing concern about a potential veto from Russia and China in the UN Security Council.
