EU leaders plan to impose ‘Venezuela-style’ sanctions on Ukraine’s northern neighbor Belarus when the heads of government meet in Brussels on Thursday

. Sanctions are to hit Belarus’ financial, oil, tobacco and potash sectors. Last year, the EU imported from Belarus more than €1 billion worth of crude oil, fuel and lubricants and €1.2 billion worth of chemicals, including potash, a potassium-rich salt used in fertilizer.
