Due to the war, the amount of land suitable for agriculture has decreased by 26%.

According to a KSE study, 10.5 million hectares of agricultural land has been affected by the Russian invasion in 2022, and the area of land that can be used for agriculture in 2024 is 32.92 million hectares, which is 26% less than 2021’s figure.

In 2022, territories in the Luhansk, Kherson, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhya, Sumy, and Donetsk regions were the most affected. Overall, the share of Ukrainian territory that has been affected by the war is 31.74%.

After the de-occupation of the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Chernihiv regions and partial de-occupation of the Mykolaiv and Sumy regions, the total area of Ukraine’s land resources that are feasible for economic use increased by 13.58% to 46.79 million hectares. The area of agricultural land increased by 13.19%, and forests – by 16.73%.

In Ukraine, more than 300,000 hectares of agricultural land were demined last year, which will be included in this year’s total acreage. At the beginning of 2024, the area suitable for agricultural activity increased to 48.11 million hectares due to the liberation of portions of the Kharkiv and Kherson regions.
