Duda calls for Ukraine’s NATO membership, while Scholz and Macron only discuss security guarantees.
“Ukraine is waiting for a clear signal, a clear prospect of membership,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said at a meeting in Paris. He hopes the July NATO summit in Vilnius will bring Ukraine the “light at the end of the tunnel”.
At the same time, the leaders of France and Germany, Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz, spoke only of security guarantees for Kyiv. Scholz reiterated that the allies will continue close consultations on this issue.
According to the FT, these guarantees include annual deliveries of state-of-the-art weapons, NATO-standard training, and intelligence sharing. It is assumed that this will deter future Russian aggression and allow Ukraine to join the Alliance as soon as a political consensus emerges.
Macron, in turn, noted that the upcoming EU and NATO summits would be devoted to the future of collective security.
