Denmark, currently holding the EU presidency, supports Ukraine’s accession to the EU and seeks to limit Hungary’s voting rights within the bloc.

Mette Frederiksen, the Danish prime minister who took on the six-month EU Council presidency in July, has committed to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to join the EU.

“Ukraine should be in the EU. This benefits both Denmark and Europe. During Denmark’s presidency, we will do everything possible to assist Ukraine on its EU membership journey,” she stated.

Frederiksen also stressed the need for the EU to strengthen Ukraine militarily and to weaken Russia through sanctions.

Furthermore, Denmark’s European Affairs Minister Marie Bjerre is considering applying Article 7 of the EU treaty against Hungary, as Budapest is violating EU laws. This article allows the suspension of a member state’s voting rights or sanctions for rule-breaking behavior. Bjerre indicated that the EU should also explore restricting access to European funds for countries in violation of EU law.

She criticized Hungary for blocking Ukraine’s EU membership and added that Denmark, during its presidency, “is prepared to consider all political and practical options for advancing our goals.”
