Berlin is preparing a long-term initiative to support Ukraine’s air defense.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius plans to establish a sustained effort to aid Ukraine’s air defense, said Mitko Müller, a spokesman for the German Defense Ministry. He explained that this continues last year’s Immediate Action on Air Defense initiative, during which Germany and its partners raised about €1B to purchase ammunition for Ukraine.

The spokesman also mentioned that the head of the German Defense Ministry will discuss supporting Ukrainian air defenses with his American counterpart, Pete Hegseth, during a visit to the US later this month. “Production capacities are crucial for the supply of weapons. Due to the Russian threat, demand is very high worldwide,” Müller noted.

Müller added that a dedicated working group is working daily to organize supplies as quickly as possible. “Despite this, bilateral and multilateral agreements are of utmost importance to attract existing resources, if necessary,” he said.

Additionally, the situation in Ukraine and the enhancement of its air defenses were also discussed with US President Donald Trump by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
