Belgium allocates €9M for Ukrainian energy infrastructure, and Ukraine plans to build the first underground hydroelectric power station.

The Government of Belgium and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) concluded a €9M financial agreement, which will be directed to repairing Ukraine’s damaged energy infrastructure. Partnership efforts will be focused on solving energy problems in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa. Through these efforts, backup generation systems will be deployed, and the local energy infrastructure will be improved to allow greater access to heating, electricity, and clean water for area residents, while also reducing dependence on traditional fuel types.

As reported by Ukrhydroenergo: “We are making changes to the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant construction project. It must be inaccessible to the enemy. Thus, we plan to build it underground.”

The updated project, with adaptation to the current state of Ukraine’s energy system, provides for the construction of a hydroelectric power station with a capacity of up to 1,000 MW.

During the full-scale war, Ukrhydroenergo stations have been attacked 120 times, resulting in the loss of about 45% of its generation capacity.
