Almost 90% of Ukrainians want their country to become a NATO member.
According to a study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, most Ukrainians (89%) in all regions of the country favor membership. However, there are also 8% who spoke out against joining the Alliance, and 3% who did not answer. At the same time, for 18% of respondents, it would be acceptable to refuse to join NATO to establish peace, while for 76%, such a price is unacceptable.
Also, many Ukrainians have stopped supporting the replacement of full NATO membership with security guarantees, the study says. In May 2022, 39% of those polled insisted on joining NATO, and 42% considered it acceptable to receive security guarantees in return, but by May 2023, public opinion has noticeably shifted: the share of those who insist on NATO membership has increased to 58%, and the percentage of those for whom security guarantees are acceptable decreased to 29%.
